Adams, Grant A.
Grant A. Adams, born in Livingston County, Illinois, on November 11, 1867, exemplified the western spirit of progress through his extensive career as a brick contractor. After being educated in Illinois until age eighteen, he moved to Los Angeles, California, in 1885 to join his father, Joseph F. Adams, a prominent local contractor who erected many early schoolhouses and served on the board of education. Under his father’s guidance, Adams learned the brick mason trade before temporarily returning to the Middle West to operate in cities like Chicago, Springfield, and St. Louis. During this period, he served as a foreman for the Culver Construction Company, notably superintending the rebuilding of the National Lincoln Monument in Springfield. He later returned to California in 1902, working briefly for the Standard Oil Company in Point Richmond and the Gladding and McBean Manufacturing Company in Lincoln before permanently establishing himself in Fresno in 1903.
As a major force in the upbuilding of Fresno County, Adams executed large scale brick contracting projects that shaped the architectural landscape of the region. His notable construction achievements included several local schools, the Fulton Hotel, the San Joaquin Light and Power Company block, the First Christian Church, and multiple private residences. His professional influence also extended beyond Fresno into neighboring communities such as Parlier, Porterville, Selma, Madera, Reedley, Modesto, and Turlock. Beyond his business success, Adams was highly active in community life as a member of the Odd Fellows, Eagles, and Elks lodges, and he achieved national recognition as an elite amateur trapshooter with the Raisin City Gun Club and Fresno Blue Rock Club. A dedicated family man, he raised five children named Charles, Minnie, Glenn, Viola, and Verne while contributing significantly to the historical development of Central California.
